I remember Eden when it was still a working china clay mine. I must have been about fourteen and I spent weeks staying in what used to be called a teenage hotel with loads of other kids. It was sold to my parents as a holiday for musical children, but in reality we used to run wild on horseback, spend hours surfing at Watergate bay, go to discos and generally lark about all summer. I learnt to smoke, read dirty books and tried all sorts of dangerous sports, but every weekday evening we all had to be washed and dressed in clean clothes and present ourselves with our musical instruments for an evening of playing and singing. I absolutely loved it and I learnt a lot more then a bit of music. I learnt lots of traditional Cornish fishing and folk music and a couple of years later I went back and earnt my holiday money by busking in pubs in the evenings. Anyway, one of the neighbours at the hotel worked at something high up in the clay mine and we were trundled there in a bus and driven right in the middle of the place, where it was all explained to us and we watched all the water jets washing the clay down the rock walls. I found it really fascinating and a few years later when I worked in a pottery we suddenly couldn't get the china clay powder from there any more as it closed. I like to remember it as it was so I've never been to Eden. And won't be if that's the price to get in.
