They were here the year we moved in, but until two years ago I've not seen or heard any here.
Now they're properly back. I know where 5 nests are and put up a marking stick so the neighbors don't tractor over them.
They're really good about making space for wildlife, but the wheat is just getting high enough that they might not see a nest in time.
The annual scarecrow game is on, too. They put one up, the rest of us sneak up and steal it to plant elsewhere, usually in sight, but once or twice on top of a chimney or the church roof. They retrieve it and plant it back in it's field, ready for the next adventure.
We are all agreed that it does nothing to scare the birds but we all enjoy playing the game.
It's the marsh that does it. We're all a bit strange....

I wish our local farmers would use a scarecrow

They have those automated bird scarers. Double bang, starting at 06:30!

Might get a shotgun and shoot the darn thing

We get those too.

One of my jobs when the family bought our first farm was looking after bird scaring while I was shepherding. No gas guns then. I used to buy of boxes of rook scarers (bangers) from the farm supplies place and I had to hang them on a fence and set light to the end of the string and run away.
Loved that job. Outside, walking about all day and making a racket with a football rattle every time I saw anything flying near the wheat field. :)
