My personal preference in tipping is, "service charge included" in the bill. If the owner is decent enough to hand over the charge to his employees that would be great.
As mentioned previously we do tip and in a lot of cases we tip well when circumstances warrant it. Not when it's almost demanded or expected.
I've started saving up now as we will be in Canada in April and i believe compulsory tipping is expected there

I often ask if the waiting staff get anything from the service charge. If they say no I don't pay the charge when I go to pay the bill.
I'm happy to tip for good service, as long as the people who did the work actually receive it.
