The angel is built on top of a coal mine and I believe the wings represent progress from us grubbing away in the dark to more modern technology and to show there is hope for better things for the North in the future. That's the way it was explained to me while it was being built. My Dad was an architect and was well into all the details. I've probably not explained it right. I do love it though. It lifts my heart when I see it. A lot of my family come from the North and it feels as if I'm near home every time I pass it.
